A student must be a resident of St. John graduating in June from a high school in the United States Virgin Islands, have a 3.0 or better cumulative grade point average, have been accepted to an institution of higher learning, and demonstrate financial need (parents' or guardians' tax returns from previous year). Applications must be submitted with the following: transcript of credits, S.A.T. scores, record of extracurricular activities, and three letters of reference (one must be and academic reference, and others may be a previous employer, guidance counselor or character reference).

Democratic Party Scholarship Essay Contest
Donor organization: The St. Thomas District of the Virgin Islands Democratic Party

Amount of scholarship: The winner will receive $500. The runner up will receive a $250.
Qualifications:
(1) Any high school graduating senior who is a registered Democrat or a relative of a registered Democrat is eligible to enter the essay contest.
(2) Contestants may write about a local event that has personal meaning, such as care of the elderly, politics, education, sports, protection of the environment, V.I. culture, etc. Additional topics are: what changes would you recommend to make our party more attractive to young people? Do you believe our nation is prepared to elect an Afro-American or a female as president?
(3) Essays must be no less than 300 words but not more than 325 words. They will be judged on content, grammar and spelling.

HOVENSA Scholarship Program
Donor organization: HOVENSA L.L.C. Scholarship Program

Amount of scholarship: The amount of a scholarship award can be as much as $2,000 per year for a student who will attend the University of the Virgin Islands or $4,000 per year for a student who will attend an accredited U. S. college or university outside of the Virgin Islands. Once awarded, a scholarship continues for four years provided that the recipient continues enrollment as a full-time student at an accredited college or university and maintains good academic standing at the institution.
Qualifications:
The HOVENSA scholarships are awarded based on evidence of good character, scholastic achievement, and the financial need of the applicants. It is open to all persons enrolled in a high school in the U. S. Virgin Islands, have maintained a grade average of "B" (3.0) or higher, have resided in the Virgin Islands for at least fifteen (15) years prior to the date of their application, or whose parents have resided here for at least fifteen years immediately prior to that date, and have financial need. Preference will be given to students who will pursue a degree in chemical, mechanical or electrical engineering, those degrees which are most frequently a requirement for professional entry level positions at HOVENSA; however, awards will not be limited to students studying in those fields.

GERS Scholarships for Qualifying Students
For the 10th year, scholarships will be presented by the Government Employees Retirement System (GERS) to dependents of the GERS membership, announced GERS board chairman Vincent Liger.
The scholarships provide tuition support for four years, for students enrolled full time in a program leading to the award of a bachelors degree at an accredited college or university.
Candidates for scholarships will be selected from qualifying graduates of the territorys high schools.
Finalists will be selected from each island, St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix. Up to three scholarships may be awarded.
To be eligible to apply, a student must be the child, stepchild or legal dependent of a contributing member of GERS, be a graduating senior of a high school in the territory, and have a grade point average of no less than 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale).
All nominees must show financial need.
