April 12, 2007 — Juanita Boneque, St. Croix district mathematics coordinator, announces that in observance of Mathematics Awareness Month, April 2007, educators will engage students in meaningful math activities that stimulate the brain cells and enhance learning. The theme for this year's observance is, "Mathematics and the Brain."
"One of the most exciting challenges in modern science is to understand the human brain and its mechanism," Boneque said. "Mathematics plays a vital role in the research to understand the mechanisms and function of the human brain, from its smallest components to the brain itself."
The coordinator challenges parents and teachers to stimulate students' interest in mathematics during the observance. "Let's continue to demonstrate the importance of mathematics in our daily lives by encouraging students to excel in the subject by steering them to challenging activities that show them the relevance of math in everything we do," she concluded.
