April 16, 2007 — A small earthquake was felt Monday in the U.S. and British Virgin Islands.
The Puerto Rico Seismic Network reported that an earthquake rating 4.2 on the Richter Scale occurred at 10:45 a.m. Its location was 19 degrees north latitude and 64.6 degrees west longitude, which put it 27 miles northwest of Anegada and 105 miles northeast of San Juan in an area called the Sombrero Fault.
The earthquake happened 21 miles beneath the sea floor. No damage was reported.
This brings to 71 the total number of earthquakes that occurred in the area during April. The largest registered 4.7 on the Richter Scale, occurring April 8 in the Sepentrional Fault west of Puerto Rico.
In 2006, a total of 2,254 earthquakes happened in the region, experts said.
