UVI Summer Institute for Future Global Leaders Opens Today
UVI's Summer Institute for Future Global Leaders in the Caribbean opened today (Thursday, May 17) on the St. Thomas campus. The institute is an intensive two-week leadership development course that focuses on the global business environment, leadership for tomorrow, and culture and communication. The 35 participants are junior, senior or graduate level college students from the U.S. mainland and throughout the Caribbean who are interested in leadership. The 2007 theme is "Building Capacity for Managing Social and Environmental Challenges in the Globalized 21st Century." Dr. H.E. Angus Friday, Grenada's ambassador to the United Nations, was the featured speaker in the opening session.
The institute, which continues through May 30, is organized by Dr. Solomon Kabuka, UVI professor of international business and management. The public is invited to attend the institute's World Forum Debate at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, May 29, at UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts. Details are available from the Summer Institute Web site.
Junior, Senior High Students Sought for Summer Enrichment Program
St. Croix students in grades nine through 11 are invited to apply for a UVI summer enrichment program in robotics and Netlogo. The program – called the Boosting the Intellect to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Institute – will run from June 15 through 28 on the University's St. Croix campus. Talented eighth graders may also be accepted. Applications are available at all junior high and high schools on St. Croix. The application deadline is June 1. UVI Math Placement Exam Scheduled May 23 on St. Thomas
The University of the Virgin Islands will offer a Math Placement Exam for incoming students who plan to take summer or fall semester courses from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 23, on the St. Thomas campus. Testing will take place on the third floor of the Classroom Administration (CA) Building. For details, call Dr. Rosalie Dance at 693-1253.
Reichhold to Conclude Family Series with Dance by Step Afrika!
UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts' Family Series celebrates the handclapping, foot stomping rhythms of Step Afrika! The dance troupe performs at Island Center on St. Croix on Friday, May 25, and at the Reichhold Center on St. Thomas on Saturday, May 26. Showtime both days is 8 p.m. Step Afrika! is a unique dance company that merges the African-American phenomenon of "stepping" with South Africa's renowned gumboot dancing. Freshman Center Workshops Offered on St. Croix Campus
Freshman students enrolled in UVI's summer sessions on the St. Croix campus are invited to participate in workshops in PowerPoint, test taking and essay writing. Cas Cay Mangrove Clean-Up Continues on May 19; Volunteers Sought
The Virgin Islands Mangrove Research and Conservation Coalition (VIMRCC) will conduct a land-based clean-up and monitoring effort at the Cas Cay Mangrove Lagoon this month on Saturday, May 19. Coalition members are asking for volunteers to help with the effort. A water-based clean-up was held on May 13. SBDC, FirstBank V.I. Plan Seminars in May on St. Thomas
UVI's Small Business Development Center and FirstBank V.I. will conclude a series of financial seminars designed for small business operators on May 23 on St. Thomas. The seminar, which is titled "Understanding Financial Statements," is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the SBDC Training Facility at Nisky Center. Carolyn Cole, a commercial lending officer at FirstBank, will be the presenter. Admission is free. However, pre-registration is required. To pre-register, contact the SBDC office at 776-3206.
Online Registration Continuing for Summer Sessions, Fall Semester
Online registration for UVI's upcoming second summer session and the 2007 fall semester is in progress. UVI's online registration system, called BUCSS for Banner Utilization Central for Self Services – can be accessed from the BUCSS logo on UVI's home page – http://www.uvi.edu. Registration for Summer Session II classes continues through June 20. Classes will begin on June 22.
