Police Investigating Weekend Shooting of Man at Head Start Center

May 29, 2007 — Police continue to investigate the weekend killing of 22-year-old Julio St. Jean of Estate Smithfield.
St. Jean sustained multiple gunshot wounds Saturday near an Estate Profit Head Start Center, according to Police Spokeswoman Shawna Richards. Police were called to the area following reports of a homicide, she said.
"The victim was reportedly in the company of a friend who was working as a security guard at the Head Start Center," she said. Officers were dispatched to the center at approximately 7 a.m. Saturday, according to Police reports. The two men reportedly watched movies and fell asleep, Richards said.
"The security guard reports that he was awakened by the sound of shots being fired, but believed the noises of gunfire to come from the television and went back to sleep," Richards said. “At approximately 6:30 a.m., the security guard discovered the shooting.”
St. Jean was pronounced dead at the scene by Medical Examiner Michelle DuPre. His killing is the second on the island in just two weeks, and the 13th territory wide. The last homicide was tallied on St. Thomas May 12 when 30-year-old Recardo Rosa was shot and killed while walking home from a Smith Bay-area nightspot with his friend. That incident came just days after a 25-year-old Dominican Republic native was killed during an armed robbery in the Bovoni area while walking with two other people. (See “Armed Robbery Leaves One Man Dead, One Critically Injured.”
No arrests have been made in either of the cases this month, and Richards said anyone with information should call the confidential Police hotline at (340) 778-4950 or 911.
