May 31 – Senator Neville James, on Tuesday, thanked his Senate colleagues for successfully overriding Gov. John P. de Jongh Jr.'s veto of a bill to ensure the Territory's schools receive a final interior cleaning after all major repairs and maintenance are completed before the schools open for the new school year.
Bill No. 27-0044 Section 3, which was introduced by Senator James in April, was intended to earmark $600,000 ($300,000 for each district) for the removal of debris, construction dust and other miscellaneous waste left around public school campuses following summer repairs and maintenance of the public schools.
"When school re-opens in September, the campuses should be ready to receive and instruct students," Senator James stated. "The funds to achieve this cannot be delayed due to fiscal year constraints," Senator James concluded.
