Aug. 21, 2007 – Senate Vice-President Senator Shawn-Michael Malone extended his heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of world famous musician John Lucien on his passing on Saturday, August 18, 2007.
"I was deeply saddened when I heard this news. As a young boy, I vividly remember my father, the late Roy Malone, playing music with Mr. Lucien. He was one of the most gifted musician I have ever had the privilege of hearing in person. Undoubtedly, our territory has truly lost another great Virgin Islander," Malone said.
Lucien was considered a great musical talent and one of the most distinctive voices in jazz by many across the globe. He produced songs such as "Would You Believe In Me" and "Lady Love" during the 1970's. Though his music touched people in all places, Lucien held a special place in his heart for the Virgin Islands. He was known to mentor many Virgin Islands' musicians and offer knowledge to anyone in need. After the tragic loss of his 17 year old daughter, Dalila, on the infamous Flight 800 in July 1996, Lucien recorded "Endless Is Love" in her honor.
"John Lucien was certainly a Virgin Islands treasure. It is especially sad that we as a community did not do more to honor and recognize Mr. Lucien before his passing. We should have done more to highlight his life and achievements for our younger generation. This way, they could understand that it is possible for a Virgin Islander to attain this type of success in the music industry. He was a pioneer and a trailblazer," Malone added.
"Once again, I extend my sympathies to his family and friends. I, along with my entire family and staff, share in your tragic loss. May God comfort and strengthen you during this time of extreme sadness and grief," Malone concluded.
