Sept. 23, 2007 — Three public schools were closed and St. Thomas residents east of Raphune Hill were left without water Sunday evening when a two-foot-wide water main ruptured near the waterfront, the V.I. Water and Power Authority said in a statement.
Repairs are expected to continue all day Monday and into the night before the break is fixed, WAPA said. With no water service, classes were canceled for Monday at Joseph Gomez and E. Benjamin Oliver elementary schools and the Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School.
Lisa A. Hassell-Forde, insular superintendent of schools for the St. Thomas-St. John District, said in a statement released Sunday, " Students and school-based personnel are asked not to report on Monday, but to continue listening to their radios as we will be receiving updates throughout the day to determine the status of the repairs and how long the schools may be affected.”
WAPA said some customers at higher elevations in downtown St. Thomas, especially Hospital Ground and Estate Thomas, may have problems with water pressure or see service shut off entirely while repairs are
taking place.
