Oct. 10, 2007 – The annual National Latino AIDS Awareness Day is held on Oct. 15. Accounting for 19 percent of all AIDS cases in the United States, HIV/AIDS continues to have a devastating and disproportionate impact on the U.S. Virgin Islands Latino community. With the second highest HIV/AIDS rate in the U.S. Virgin Islands it is imperative to acknowledge and provided needed prevention services in the Latino community.
This day provides an opportunity to increase awareness of the disease in the Latino community. Helping Others in a Positive Environment Inc. (HOPE Inc.) will promote its "Know Your Status" campaign by encouraging HIV testing. The organization will host an HIV health/informational fair, targeting members of the Latino community.
All services provided will be free and will include HIV screenings with results while you wait, information and safer sex kits. It will be held from 5-9 p.m., on Saturday, Oct. 13, at Market Square, St. Thomas.
