Oct. 9, 2007 Reichhold Center for the Arts will bring Maze featuring Frankie Beverly to the Virgin Islands to perform at 8 p.m. Oct. 20.
Maze, led by the charismatic singer Frankie Beverly, has built a solid reputation over its 31-year career as one of the most beloved and entertaining acts in contemporary R&B. Its catalog of hits includes such songs as the haunting Joy and Pain, I Cant Get Over You, Golden Time Of Day and Back In Stride, the groups first No. 1 single and its most enduring song.
Singer, songwriter and producer Beverly, along with original members Ronald Roame Lowry and McKinley Bug Williams, left the Philadelphia music scene in the early 1970s for San Francisco. There, Marvin Gaye, the legendary soul singer, took a shine to Beverly and group and helped secure them a record deal. He also changed the groups name from Raw Soul to Maze.
Riding a fresh, smooth and stylish approach to urban R&B, Maze featuring Frankie Beverly released their debut album, Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly, in 1977. This was followed the next year by the popular Golden Time of Day, the first of the groups seven gold albums. From 1977 to 1981 — the groups commercial peak Maze featuring Frankie Beverly released such best-selling albums as Inspiration (1979), Joy and Pain (1980) and Live In New Orleans (1981).
The band has continued to release albums, gaining a loyal fan base for its energetic live shows. In addition, its music has been extensively sampled by hip-hop performers, rooting the Maze sound in a new generation.
In 1996, Maze featuring Frankie Beverly marked its 20th anniversary with the release of Anthology, a comprehensive overview of the groups recording career.
This summer, Maze with Frankie Beverly closed the prestigious Essence Music Festival for the 13th consecutive year. The group also remains a staple of the annual Tom Joyner Fantastic Voyage cruise in addition to maintaining a steady touring schedule that includes this years The Fresh Tour.
