Oct. 31, 2007 — The exit lane from the Cyril E. King Airport will be closed from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Thursday through Saturday for the second phase of repair work on the deteriorated force main sewer line.
The latest work will be to the east of the previous repair work along the Julian Jackson/Memorial Moravian Highway, according to a news release from the V.I. Waste Management Authority (VIWMA).
The westbound entrance lane to the airport will be closed during the evenings. Motorists traveling westbound to the airport must travel through Sub Base to the airport entrance road. Motorists exiting the airport will be allowed to proceed to the traffic light, while motorists entering the airport from eastbound will be able to make the right turn at the light.
All motorists are asked to slow down, obey posted signs and be aware of the crews and heavy equipment working in the area.
"The executive director expresses her apologies for the continuing road closures, inconvenient traffic interruptions, untimely public notices, poor site conditions and lengthy project-completion schedule," the release said. "The complex nature of repair work to this 30-inch sewer main was complicated and extended due to the need to rotate the Cancryn Main pump station operation nightly and return to normal service early each morning to avoid sewage bypasses, and the discovery of unexpected field conditions which could not be anticipated. Our dedicated staff and contractor, H&R Mechanical, have worked diligently to complete this first phase of rehabilitation of this very deteriorated section of the sewer system.
