Dec. 14, 2007 Mango Tango Art Gallery has coordinated a second art exhibition at Yacht Haven Grande. The opening and champagne reception for island favorite W. B. Thompson is from 6:30 to 8:30pm Saturday in the marina reception area, located in the building which houses U.S. Customs.
Thompson has worked with the gallery for over a decade,. He has also worked diligently to develop successful representation with galleries in California, Texas, the Carolinas, and Key West. His use of vibrant colors are inspired by the Caribbean where he lives and paints, but his signature style reaches out to viewers throughout the United States, said Jane Coombes, gallery owner.
His initial works were mixed media on paper. He created conte pencil drawings, which were overlaid with oil pastel and acrylic paint. His bold brushstroke, use of oil pastel sticks, and juxtaposed colors combined to capture a loyal audience. Because texture is very important to Thompson, he began working on hardboard and canvas, which provide the support for the paintings in the current exhibition.
Coombes notes that "viewers in the gallery often compare his art process to that of Van Gogh. However, I find his work more akin to that of Bonnard, with a decidedly contemporary twist."
The show includes familiar vistas rendered with a wild palette, according to Coombes.
Two are unusual night scenes. "They are very accessible. However, my favorite painting in the grouping is Medusa Vase, which is an off-beat image with a raw edge of energy."
The works will be on view and for sale for one month in the Yacht Haven Grande marina reception area.
