Jan. 7, 2008 — Anyone interested in being a candidate to the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colo., this summer must file a statement of candidacy form by Thursday, according to Simon Caines, executive director of the V.I. Democratic Party.
V.I. Democrats will select six delegates to represent them at the convention, three from each election district. The delegate breakdown is as follows:
— Three pledged delegates from the St. Croix district (1 male/2 females);
— Three pledged delegates from the St. Thomas/St. John district (2 male/1 female); and
— One alternate will be selected in the event one of the pledged delegates cannot make it to the convention.
For a detailed explanation of the selection process, democrats may read the complete delegate selection plan at vbs.vi/delegateplan.pdf.
Any registered democrat interested in filing a statement of candidacy may download the form at vbs.vi/candidancystatement.pdf.
For anyone without Internet access, the statement of candidacy form and the delegate selection plan are available at the UVI libraries in both districts and at public libraries on St. Croix, St. John and St. Thomas. Please call Simon Caines at 643-4600 or your respective district democratic chairs if you have any questions or for further information: Barbara Dalmida-Thompson on St. John at 776-6484, Dodson James on St. Croix at 277-6322 and Glen J. Smith on St. Thomas at 998-0525.
Once again, Jan. 10 is the deadline for filing statement of candidacy forms. Election of delegates will be held Feb. 9 at venues to be announced.
