Jan. 12, 2008 – The Charlotte Kimelman Cancer Institute invites the public to attend a seminar on cervical cancer as part of Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. The seminar will be given twice, the first at noon and the second at 6:30 p.m., on Wednesday, Jan. 23, in the Benjamin Medical Auditorium. The Director of Radiation Oncology at CKCI, Dr. Shirnett Williamson, will conduct the sessions.
Approximately 4 percent of cancer patients seen at the Schneider Regional Medical Center are diagnosed with cervical cancer, primarily caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV), which is spread sexually. The incidence of the disease is increasing, which experts attribute to the higher number of women engaging in sexual activity early in life. The cervical PAP test is recommended for the most accurate early detection.
Dr. Williamson, who has her medical degree from Howard University, has treated many women with cervical cancer.
Cervical cancer can be prevented just as it can be treated, Williamson said. For more information, contact Sam Topp at 776-8311, ext. 2315.
