Alert: Man Killed in Hit-and-Run Accident; Driver Sought

Jan. 27, 2008 — A 31-year-old man died in a car wreck early Sunday morning, and police have issued an all-points bulletin for the driver they believe caused the accident.
Nefari Benjamin, 25, also known as "Addis," is wanted in connection with the wreck, which occurred at approximately 5:31 a.m. Sunday morning, according to a V.I. Police Department news release.
Preliminary statements by witnesses at the scene indicate Benjamin was driving at a high rate of speed on Rattan Road (Route 74) west of Christiansted when he lost control of his vehicle, a blue 2006 Toyota Rav 4, license number CDN 945. His car crossed the median line and ran into the passenger side of a four-door 1999 Toyota Tercel, according to Sgt. Charles Orange, commander of the Traffic Investigation Bureau. Benjamin fled the scene, police say. His address is listed as David Hamilton Jackson Terrace, Christiansted.
The victim, a passenger in the Tercel, appeared to be killed on impact, Orange said. The victim's address is listed as La Grande Princess. The driver of the vehicle, a 25-year-old woman who lives at a different address in La Grande Princess, sustained a laceration to the chin. She was treated at the Juan F. Luis Hospital and released.
Police ask that anyone who has seen Nefari "Addis" Benjamin or knows his whereabouts notify 911.
