Alert: Raw Sewage Flowing in Campo Rico Area

April 4, 2008 — Officials are investigating reports that the Campo Rico pump station went offline Friday due to mechanical failure to the house pump and the standby diesel pump, causing raw sewage to overflow from a manhole located in the middle of a street in the area. The sewage is continuing to flow into a storm drain that travels under the Melvin Evans Highway and leads into the waters of Campo Rico Beach.
Planning and Natural Resources Division of Environmental Protection said in a release sent Friday afternoon, children and adults with compromised immune systems should avoid the above mentioned areas, especially the area around the Campo Rico station. “Standing or running water in these areas may contain contaminants or pollutants harmful to human health,” the release said. DPNR will continue to monitor the impacted area. For additional information regarding this matter contact the V.I. Waste Management Authority 773-4489.
