April 8, 2008 – St. George Village Botanical Garden's "Second Saturdays" program on April 12 will take a look at how musical instruments can be made from plants.
From 9 a.m. to noon, on the second Saturday of each month, SGVBG board member Marilyn Chakroff creates botanically related workshops that will inspire local children and their parents to be more aware of the role plants play in our lives. This Saturday, music teacher Elizabeth Betts will host the activity.
Chakroff says that traditional musical instruments around the world are often made from plants.
"What was the first musical instrument? Perhaps it was a flute, made from a hollow reed," she said. "In this workshop, parents and children will learn about such traditional instruments and the types of plants used. Participants will choose plants and make their own musical instruments to take home."
This workshop is sponsored by St. Croix residents Robert and Beverly Bartner; it will be held in the Bodine Visitors' Center at the Botanical Garden.
Space for the workshops is limited, so call 692-2874 to register to ensure a place. The payment of $5 per person can be made at the workshop.
