April 22, 2008 – The St Croix Animal Welfare Center (AWC) is putting up for adoption as many pets as possible during the weekend of May 3 and May 4. Dogs and cats, puppies and kittens are seeking permanent, loving homes.
St. Croix AWC has joined the 14th annual pet adopt-a-thon, the world's largest pet adoption event. Hundreds of shelters in dozens of countries are participating in the 2008 event and are entered into a drawing for $5,000 to be awarded by North Shore Animal League America after the adoption event.
Discounted adoption rates will be offered during the adopt-a-thon weekend. Adoption fees cover vaccines, dewormings, and spayed or neutered surgeries. Also prior to adoption shelter staff and volunteers work to socialize animals, give them proper exercise, pet care and, of course, love and attention.
In addition to the shelter facility at No. 32 Clifton Hill, the AWC flea market located at No. 18 Orange Grove will host off-site adoptions beginning at 9 a.m., on Saturday, May 3, plus special sales for shoppers.
"Hundreds of animals found permanent homes last year through the adoption facility operated by the St Croix AWC," said Acting Director Stacia Boswell. "We are the only organization on island providing animal rescue, care and adoption services for the numerous homeless companion animals on St Croix."
To view animals available for adoption, visit the shelter facility in Clifton Hill. To learn more about the work of St Croix AWC, to volunteer or sponsor an animal, call 778-1650.
Pet Adopt-a-thon 2008 was created by the North Shore Animal League America to save the lives of hundreds of homeless animals. For more information on the event visit www.animal-league.org/petadoptathon2008.
