June 11, 2008 – On Sunday, June 22, at Hotel on the Cay in Christiansted, bartenders and servers from throughout the territory will compete to win the bragging rights of "Best bar in the Virgin Islands" and raise funds for the homeless animals of the St. Croix Animal Welfare Center.
Judges will rank their skills and talents based on their performances in several different specialty competitions. The public is invited to enjoy the action and cheer on contestants from Angry Nates, Bongos, Breezez, Fort Christian Brew Pub, Chicken Charlies, Full Moon Beach Bar, Parrots Cove (all of St. Croix) and Fat Turtles (of St. Thomas).
In addition, Rodrigo Delpech, the five-time world champion flair bartender, will again attend and bring with him challenger Mauro Garrido, BarWars V Pro-Division third-place winner. Both gentlemen will demonstrate their amazing skills and difficult routines. Following the competition, local musician Kurt Schindler will perform.
Patrons may donate Pedigree dog food and Whiskas cat food in exchange for free drink tickets. Donations can be dropped off at the St. Croix AWC shelter located at No. 32 Clifton Hill. For more information, call AWC at 778-1650.
"The Friends of the St. Croix Animal Welfare Center have created a fast-paced and fun benefit event," said event committee chairperson Terri Wunschel. "We encourage the community to come out and enjoy the unique entertainment that is VI Bartender Olympics, support your favorite bar or restaurant and help us benefit the needy animals of St. Croix AWC."
Tickets are $25 in advance and can be purchased at any of the participating bars, St. Croix AWC's animal shelter or online at www.vibartenderolympics.com.
