Sept. 10, 2008 — Police arrested a Hidden Valley man this week and charged him with first-degree murder in a shooting that happened nearly a year ago at Magens Bay Beach.
Joel A. Vicars, 21, was arrested Monday in connection with the Sept. 30, 2007, shooting of Dennis Corraspe at Magens Bay Beach. The Major Crime Unit of the V.I. Police Department arrested Vicars around 4:30 p.m. Monday, according to a police news release.
Police also charged him with felony murder, first-degree assault and third-degree assault. Judge Leon Kendall set Vicars' bail at $100,000. He was placed in custody pending his advice-of-rights hearing.
In the September 2007 incident, Corraspe was shot in the abdomen near the Magens Bay concession stand and died in surgery after being transported to the hospital, police say. (See "Details of Fatal Magens Bay Shooting Still Murky.")
Vicars, named in January as one of the V.I.'s Most Wanted, was also arrested in March in connection to robbery and theft incidents in June and November 2007. At that time, Vicars was found in an attic wearing a bulletproof vest and in possession of a fully loaded Glock 9mm handgun, according to police.
