Nov. 4, 2008 — A freak accident in front of the Beeston Hill Medical Center during rush hour Tuesday forced residents trying to get home from Christiansted to take the long way home, and resulted in the death of a racehorse.
Police officers on the scene reported that a horse trailer being pulled by a gold Toyota pickup truck traveling in the eastbound lane of Route 66 became disconnected and went into the westbound lane. A Bates flatbed semi truck heading in the westbound direction smashed into the horse trailer, mangling the trailer and killing the horse inside. No people were injured, according to officers.
The horse killed was reported to be a thoroughbred racehorse.
Police closed the road off at the curve a few hundred feet from Beeston Hill and directed traffic toward Catherine's Rest on Route 83.
But cars passed slowly and traffic backed up quickly down the Contentment Road hill toward Christiansted. Those leaving Christiansted after 5 p.m. reported being delayed almost a half hour coming up the hill.
The accident remains under investigation by the V.I. Police Department's Traffic Investigation Bureau.
