Psychologists Plan Workshop on Understanding Sex Offenders

Nov. 6, 2008 – The Association of Virgin Islands Psychologists will hold a continuing education workshop on Understanding Sex Offenders from 1-4 p.m., on Friday, Nov. 21, at the Schneider Medical Center's Kimelman Cancer Center auditorium. Dr. Ron Herron, associate clinical director at V.I.'s Behavior Services on St. Croix, will present the seminar, designed for mental health professionals. Dr. Herron is a recognized leader in the assessment and treatment of adolescents and adults with behavioral and sexually acting-out behaviors.
The half-day program will emphasize how psychologists, social workers, nurses, counselors and others can employ documented, differential diagnostic assessments tied to evidence-based multimodal interventions for sexual offenders.
Lecture, discussion and case vignettes will provide an overview of the extent of sexual victimization across different societies and cultures, and outline the recent trends in the evaluation and treatment of these types of assaults. The audience will be introduced to the findings about sex offenders involved in the criminal justice system, including commonly identified characteristics within the sex offender population — and approaches used to classify groups of sex offenders into homogeneous subtypes. Attendees will also learn about the current etiological theories of sex offending and consider the implications of these findings for contemporary sex-offender management and treatment.
Pre-registration fees for AVIP members, SMC staff and full-time students are $35 and $50 for others. Attendance is limited, so sign up early to avoid the additional $10 registration fee at the door. Continuing Education Credits (CEU's) are available.
For information and registration forms, contact Dr. Lori Thompson at 774-2228 or Dr. Tom Tyne at 776-3663, or e-mail them at [email protected] or [email protected].
