Nov. 26, 2006 – Laurinburg Institute of North Carolina is scheduled to host a basketball clinic at 5:30 p.m., at the Charlotte Amalie High School gymnasium on Tuesday, Dec. 2. Guest speakers will include Laurinburg alumni coach, Derrick Heyliger; referee and alumni, Carol Callwood; and Laurinburg former women's basketball champion, JoAnne Christopher. All of them are alumni who will provide basketball tips to the 2008-2009 CAHS basketball team. Former Laurinburg Basketball Hall of Famer Assistant Commissioner Stephen Jones will provide an overview of The Laurinburg Institute and Jacquel Dawson and Lynn Cooper of the Virgin Islands Friends of Laurinburg Institute will provide students with an update on the Laurinburg Celebrity Golf Tournament, tentatively scheduled for this summer, which will raise money for 25 scholarships to send high school students from the V.I. to the institute.
Laurinburg is a preparatory high school that caters predominantly to African-Americans who are musically, artistically, athletically and academically gifted. The institute has a reputation for graduating top athletes, scientists, mathematicians, artists and musicians and historically has graduated many prominent Virgin Islanders.
Founded by Booker T. Washington and Spike Lee's great grandfather, it maintains a legacy of providing a holistic environment and an educational experience that makes a positive difference in the lives of young women and men who represent the next generation of leaders and productive citizens.
