Dec. 31, 2008 – The Virgin Islands Farmers' Cooperative Inc. will hold a farmers' market from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., on Saturday, Jan. 3, that will be held only at the Estate Grange site. The site is located across the street from the Beeston Hill Health and Fitness Club. It will feature locally grown, fresh produce and fresh, locally raised meat.
This weekend the second market outlet at Estate Castle Burke will not be opened.
Available produce includes: tomatoes, eggplant, bell peppers, pumpkin, papaya, okra, sweet potatoes, cassava, season peppers, chives, alfalfa sprouts, arugula, baby mix, lettuces, limes, sorrel and bottled drinks. The available meats will include lamb: legs, ribs, shoulders, etc.
Also, on the weekend market for Saturday, Jan. 10, the VIFC will host a potluck using the locally grown produce and meat at the Estate Grange market location. The local community is asked to bring their special local dish. Participants are asked e-mail, call or show up at the market this weekend, Jan. 3, and let VIFC know what they plan to bring.
The key goal is to have Virgin Islanders eating the local fresh grown produce and meat. It is also the Farmers' Cooperative's goal to help preserve and promote agriculture as another part of the V.I. culture.
