Jan. 9, 2009 – Patricia LaCorte of Oceana Restaurant and Gallery will be featuring San Francisco artist Maggie Malloy in her latest St. Thomas exhibition, "Rites of Passage," with an opening reception from 5:30-7 p.m., on Friday, Jan. 30, at the Oceana Gallery. Works in acrylic, mono-prints, and etchings will be available for sale, and a portion of the proceeds from art sales and other reception events will be donated to the Rwanda Project USVI. The project's primary mission is to be an educational corporation that will raise funds to take Virgin Islands high school students to Rwanda to expose them to life in a country that has been devastated by genocide and disease, while allowing them to complete community service projects there.
Malloy's 15-year art career and education has taken her to such places as San Francisco, Italy, and Southern France. Her works in ceramic sculpture, acrylic on canvas, etchings, monoprints and metal works have been featured in residencies, group and solo exhibitions. Recently, she was selected to be the solo artist in residency at The De Young Museum of San Francisco during the month of July 2009. Curated by Priscilla L. Hintz, this is the third exhibition by Malloy in the V.I. "Rites of Passage" will have three phrases: separation, liminality and re-incorporation – as noted by French author and folklorist, Arnold van Gennep in his book, "Les Rites De Passage." Priscilla L. Hintz is presently pursuing a Master's degree in Arts Administration at Goucher College and is the editor of ARTfusion, a magazine dedicated to the arts and culture of the U.S.V.I.
