Feb. 13, 2009 — The man arrested and charged Friday with the double murders of 52-year-old John "Jack" Diehl and 24-year-old Marvis Chamaro is being held without bail pending an advice of rights hearing in V.I. Superior Court.
Neville Potter Jr., 30, was picked up around 4:12 p.m. Friday on a warrant issued by Superior Court Judge James S. Carroll III. He has been charged with first- and second-degree murder, first degree assault and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
Diehl and Chamaro were gunned down around 2 p.m. Sunday in Estate Mandahl. Diehl, who lived in the area, sustained a gunshot wound to the head and chest and died about two hours later, while Chamaro's body was found in the bushes near the Mandahl Bay Road (See "'Wrong Place at the Wrong Time:' Two Killed in Mandahl.")
"It appears that Mr. Diehl happened upon some kind of criminal activity that involved Mr. Potter," Police Commissioner James McCall said Friday evening. "He was a concerned community leader, and he went out to investigate some type of disturbance that was going on, and as a result his life was taken."
Potter has also been charged with killing Chamaro, who "happened to be in the area" at the time, according to a V.I. Police Department news release.
"Our hearts go out to the family and friends of John Diehl and Marvis Chamaro," McCall said. "We are grateful for all the assistance from the community members who came forward with information on this case, and would like to thank all the men and women at VIPD and federal authorities that worked with us for their diligent efforts to apprehend this suspect."
