Diageo Special Highlights TRAXCO’s Agfair Card

0

Feb. 14, 2009 — The horses will be off and running at the Randall “Doc” James Racetrack on Sunday for this year’s Agriculture Fair races. TRAXCO along with the Horse Racing Association has put together another great race card in which 13 horses will cross the pond from St. Thomas to do battle on the big island.
The eighth race on the card, The Diageo Special, run at a distance of one mile for a purse of $6,000, highlights the card and will feature five of the 13 horses coming from St. Thomas to challenge two locally based thoroughbreds. Dashing Pirate (118), a newcomer to the territory based in St. Thomas, will be making his first start in the V.I. in the feature race. Joining him in the field will be old warriors from across the pond, Kentucky Kris (118), Silver Horn (118), Vivid Cat (118) and Car Guy (115).
Defending the home turf will be Gallego 115 and Eltish Emeral (118). Anything could happen in this race. Kentucky Kris is a past champion who has run well on St. Croix, and if he is 100 percent could take this one. Silver Horn has always run well here, and Vivid Cat has beaten most of these. Eltish Emerald is due for a big effort and has shown some promise. Gallego as usual will be coming hard late and could surprise.
The big unknown is the new comer, Dashing Pirate. Is he one of the horses brought in to challenge the magnificent Carse? If so, he will certainly have to be of higher caliber than the rest of the field, because Carse has manhandled most of them in the past.
On a sad note, St. Croix lost one of its most promising thoroughbreds on Monday, when according to reports, Miner’s Bid succumbed to colic. He was the only horse whom many thought could challenge Virgin Islands champ Carse on the track, and they were definitely on a collision course if not for this tragedy. Miner’s Bid won impressively in his two starts on the island and went out a champion.
