Event Will Seek St. Croix's Top Speller

Feb. 19, 2009 – Twenty spellers are preparing for the 2009 St. Croix District Spelling Bee set for Friday at the Alfredo Andrews Elementary School Auditorium.
According to Charlene A. Matthew, St. Croix District Language Arts Coordinator, the school district top spellers participating, and their schools, are: Ahvital Alvarez, Arthur A. Richards Junior High; Felicia Daniels, Juanita Gardine Elementary; Brandon Golden, Ricardo Richards Elementary; Diana Cardenas, Good Hope; Lorenzo LaPlace, Lew Muckle Elementary; Stefon Ambrose, Evelyn Williams Elementary; Javon Douglas, John H. Woodson Junior High; Jahsamie Rodriguez, Country Day; Yarisa Reyes, Alexander Henderson Elementary; Kinoia Fredericksen, Alfredo Andrews Elementary; Fatima Yusuf, IQRA Academy; Roy Z. Arcamo II, St. Mary’s; Ki’Anna E. Watson, Claude O. Markoe Elementary; Aaliyah K. Joseph, Eulalie R. Rivera Elementary; Tafari Maynard, Manor; Kayla Ford, Church of God Academy; Jahmokei Baptiste, Seventh Day Adventist School; Raheem Knight, Pearl B. Larsen Elementary; Jessica Wiltshire, Elena Christian Junior High and Makayla Peterson of the Charles H. Emanuel Elementary School.
The competition begins at 9:30 a.m.
The top six spellers in the District Bee will move on to compete against St. Thomas-St. John six best spellers in the Territorial Spelling Bee scheduled for March 6 at Divi Carina Bay Resort.
The St. Croix District Spelling Bee is sponsored by the Department of Education, Daily News of the Virgin Islands, Scholastic, Inc., Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Pearson Caribbean, Attorney Diane Russell, Wayne Joseph and participating schools.
