February 26, 2009 — The Reds opened their 2009 Elmo Plaskett 16 18 Big League baseball season with an 8-0 whitewash of the Diamonds Wednesday night at the DC Canegata Baseball Field.
Reds ace Ovidio Aquino was overpowering on the mound in recording the complete-game shutout while his offense led by James Sneed gave seven more runs than he would need.
After the Diamonds failed to score in the top of the first inning, the Reds got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the inning on a three-run double off the bat of Aquino to take the early lead.
The Reds continued their offensive onslaught in the bottom of the second inning, scoring four more runs to extend their lead to 7-0 after two completed innings. They scored four runs on an RBI double off the bat of Richard White and a three-run blast off the bat of Sneed.
The Reds went on to add another run in the bottom of the fourth for a final score of 8-0 as neither team would score the rest of the way.
Aquino scattered three hits in recording the complete game victory. The Reds were led offensively by Sneed, who was 3 of 4 with a home run and four RBIs. White was 2 of 3 with an RBI, and Warren Brooks went 2 of 3. For the Diamonds, the one bright star was Chakeel Newton who reached Aquino for two hits in going 2 of 3 at the plate.
All games, in 2009 Elmo Plaskett 16 18 Big League baseball season, will be played on Tuesdays and Fridays at the DC Canegata Baseball Field, starting at 6 p.m. There are three teams in this years league, the Reds managed by Roger Moore, the Diamonds managed by Ellerton Maynard, and the Cobras managed by Rueben Mercado. Anyone interested in playing can stop by the ballpark on game days. The league is very much in need of volunteers to assist with umpiring.
