April 1, 2009 — First lady Cecile deJongh has developed such a firm friendship with the Easter Bunny that he is once again jumping up in the Virgin Islands this Saturday.
For Easter 2007, shortly after donning the mantel of first lady, deJongh invited the bunny and about 600 schoolchildren to Catherineberg on Denmark Hill, the governor's residence, where the youngsters had a fine time searching the elegant grounds for Easter eggs.
DeJongh said at the time, "Easter is such a big island holiday, an Easter egg hunt seemed just right, and I was thinking about the annual hunt on the White House lawn." She continued, "We'll make it an annual tradition in the V.I., too."
True to her word, this is the third year for Easter parties. On Saturday, all youngsters between 3 and 8 are invited to the grounds of the Reichhold Center on St. Thomas and St. George's Botanical Gardens on St. Croix.
"These events are a wonderful celebration of family, friends and community," deJongh said in a news release. "In the spirit of the Easter season, I am delighted to join the governor in hosting these traditional Easter egg hunts. I encourage all children ages 3 to 8 and their guardians or family members to participate in the celebrations and share the joys of the Easter season together."
And, in that family spirit, Gov. John deJongh Jr. will also participate in this year's parties.
The St. Thomas activities are from 9:30 to 11 a.m. On St. Croix, the fun takes place from 2:30 to 4 p.m.
DeJongh and her band of volunteers ask that the children bring their own Easter baskets, which will be filled with all sorts of goodies by the Easter bunny.
