DPNR Plans Workshops and Events for Small Business Week

0

May 10, 2009 – The Department of Planning and Natural Resources and the Division of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) Small Business Technical Assistance Program will celebrate Small Business Week from May 14-22. Small businesses territory-wide will have an opportunity to learn more about environmental compliance in several workshops and informational displays presented by DPNR.
To kick off the celebration, DEP along with the St. Thomas-St. John Chamber of Commerce will host Business After Hours from 5:30-7:30 p.m., Thursday, May 14, at the Petite Pump Room on St. Thomas and on Friday, May 22, at the Caravelle Hotel Court Yard on St. Croix.
Other activities will include three Small Business Compliance informational displays to be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday, May 18, at Emancipation Garden, St. Thomas; from 9 a.m. to noon, on Tuesday, May 19, at the Band Stand, St. John; and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Friday, May 22, at the Sunny Isle Shopping Center, St Croix. Small businesses concerned about compliance rules should come out and get the information they need.
There will also be two free workshops to educate the dry cleaners and laundromat industry this week. The St. Thomas-St. John workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesday, May 20, at the Palms Court Harbour view Hotel. The St. Croix workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday, May 21, at the Cravelle Hotel Conference Room. Registration for both workshops will be from 9-9:30 a.m., and there a Continental breakfast will be provided, according to a press release from DPNR.
Small business, usually with less than 100 employees, must adhere to mandates of the Federal Clean Air Act of 1990. All businesses have 180 days to correct any discrepancies discovered at their facilities during an on-site assessment. Compliance is always cheaper than enforcement.
When Congress passed the Clean Air Act, they also required states and territories to create educational programs to give environmental assistance to small businesses. These programs are funded by the federal government. The program also keeps owners up-to-date on new regulations and requirements that could affect their businesses.
For more information on the Small Business Environmental Assistance Program workshops and informational displays or about the program, call Marylyn Stapleton or Jasmine Blyden at 774-3320 on St. Thomas or Luis Ali at 773-1082 on St. Croix.
