It has come to my attention that our Constitutional Convention members have approved the language of the territorial constitution. I want to go on the record that this document is discriminatory and "steps" on my rights as a U.S. Citizen.
I am certain I am not the only one who views this as discrimination. This document is bound to initiate legal and civil actions, not to mention bring more unrest to the territory.
I live, work, and pay taxes in the US Virgin Islands. I and my family have resided here for over 39 years! Like any other US territory or State, legal residence should have the same rights as anyone else in the territory "native or otherwise"! To do otherwise, is discriminatory. If you reside here and work here (for a given period) you should be a voting member of the society regardless where you were born. Are Native Virgin Islanders denied rights in any of the States within the United States? I think not!
Please, send this document back to the designated persons, and instruct them to get off this "Native Virgin Islander" issue and deal with the real issues at hand: creating a constitution. A constitution which can be accepted by the President of the United States of America, both houses of Congress, and most importantly by all the voters of the United States Virgin Islands.
