June 2, 2009 – Public School Calendars for the 2009-2010 school year is available for parents, educators and interested persons. The annual school calendar contains information regarding important, public school student-and-personnel reporting and departure dates, marking period schedules, legal holidays and observances for the upcoming school year, according to a press release from the V.I. Department of Education. The next school year will begin with the return of students on Monday, Aug. 31.
"The VI Department of Education's public school calendar has been developed to ensure that Virgin Islands students receive a quality education designed to promote their social, emotional, and academic achievement," said Education Commissioner La Verne Terry. "This territory-wide calendar is one on which the days of operation are universal to all public school buildings and school-based programs within the territory of the Virgin Islands, inclusive of the beginning and ending dates of the school year and all vacation days. However, the individual public school buildings and school-based program hours of operation may vary based on the universal days for activities such as staff development and parent-teacher conferences."
Copies of the school calendar will be available at the superintendent's offices in each district. The downloadable schedule will also appear on the department Web site: www.doe.vi. Residents may also tune into the government access channels: VITV Channel 10 (St. Thomas-St. John) and Channel 6 (St. Croix) for school calendar information.
