Police on the Alert for School Fights

June 5, 2009 — Police on St. Thomas were on the alert Friday for a continuation of fights that broke out Thursday between students at Eudora Kean High School.
“These things happen at the end of the school year,” Deputy Police Chief Dwayne DeGraff said Friday. “The students are misguided in their thinking that any grudges should be settled by violence at the end of the school year.”
DeGraff said there were fights at Kean school Thursday, but they were quickly quelled by police.
“The public was saying there was a riot, but it was just a series of small fights that erupted over the campus,” DeGraff said.
Additional police were stationed Thursday at the school, the Red Hook Dock and the Tutu Park mall as preventative measures. DeGraff is urging Tutu Park Mall security and store owners to deny access to any minors in school uniforms.
DeGraff said the Juvenile Investigation Bureau detectives detained at least two minors who were involved in the school fights Thursday. One fight happened on the school campus and the other occurred at the Tutu Park Mall. One male minor was arrested and two male minors were treated at the Roy Lester Schneider Hospital for injuries they sustained from being hit in the head with rocks. The two victims were treated and released.
