June 15, 2009 – The Virgin Islands Police Department Crime Prevention Weed and Seed program offers flexible GED preparation classes and provides instructors, books and all the supplies needed at no cost to students. The program is ongoing and the student can work at his or her own pace, according to a press release from VIPD Acting Commissioner Novelle E. Francis Jr.
The GED preparation and testing program is a partnership between the Central Seventh-day Adventist Church Women's Ministries and the VIPD Crime Prevention Weed and Seed program located in Estate Grove Place. Through a grant awarded to Weed and Seed books, paper, pencils, pens and any other tools are provided to the students at no cost. The church and its school provide the teaching staff and the classroom space. Classes are 7-9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
"The program has been very successful so far," said Weed and Seed Program Coordinator Denise Lewis. "We've had a record number of participants and the teachers are enthusiastic."
One of the program's advantages is that it is flexible and can adjust to changes in a student's life. For example, if a student started the program and had to stop for any reason, such as to have a baby or because of work schedule changes, they can stop for a while and pick up where they left off when they return.
Obtaining your GED is an investment in the future that opens doors to a college education, better paying jobs and job security; it also increases your income and makes you feel better about yourself.
