Police Investigate Release of Accident-Victim Photo

0

June 17, 2009 — The investigation into the recent death of 18-year-old Karence DeCosta is still ongoing, and police said Wednesday that they are also trying to find out who released a photo taken of the victim after her fatal car accident last Monday morning.
At a press conference held on St. Croix, police officials asked residents to delete the picture if they get it via text message or email.
Police are not "speculating or suggesting" that an officer or first responder — such as an emergency medical technician — sent out the photo from the crime scene, but are instead waiting for the investigation, which will track the original email, to reveal where it came from.
"If it is a police officer, it is a breach of confidentiality," said St. Croix Deputy Police Chief Christopher Howell.
DeCosta was killed just a few hours after her high school graduation. Once the investigation into the car crash is complete, results will first be released to the victim's family before being released to the media, according to a V.I. Police Department news release.
