June 19, 2009 – Rotary Club of St. Croix Harborside made a donation of $10,000 to the American Red Cross of the Virgin Islands Wednesday evening at the club’s weekly meeting. The donation was made possible from the proceeds of a fundraising roast and dinner held on May 23, which featured Lt. Governor Gregory Francis and Delegate Donna Christensen.
Rotary Harborside’s president, Bryan Ridgway, said the club was pleased with the success of the dinner and was honored to be able to present such a substantial donation to the organization.
“The American Red Cross of the Virgin Islands is one of those organizations that provide a vital service to this community, and we, the members of Rotary Club Harborside, are humbled that we were able to contribute to their operations and worthwhile efforts,” he said as he presented the check.
Also on hand for the presentation was Lt. Governor Francis, who said he accepted the invitation to be roasted without any hesitation since he knew it was for the Red Cross.
“It was my pleasure to do it and if I have to do it again, I’ll do it because it’s all for a good cause,” he said.
Accepting on behalf of the American Red Cross was the organization’s health and safety instructor, Laurie Hodge-Brooks. She thanked Rotary Club Harborside, the lieutenant. governor and the delegate to Congress.
“We appreciate their support and for giving us this donation just in time for hurricane season,” Ms. Hodge-Brooks said.
A presentation of $2,000 was also made to Rotary’s assistant district governor, David Beck, for the Rotary Foundation.
