June 20, 2009 – The Department of Planning and Natural Resources announces that the Division of Libraries, Archives and Museums in conjunction with the Friends of the Public Libraries will host territory-wide library summer reading programs.
The programs are based on three themes: Cultural Connection – children will learn about various cultures; Book-A-Trip Around the World – children will travel to many places around the world through a book; and Catch the Reading Bug! – children will be encouraged to build a love for reading.
Young readers interested in participating should visit their local public library and have a parent/guardian complete a registration form. During the summer, the participants will check out books to read and participate in activities such as story-time and scheduled performances. Workbook journals will be distributed filled with a recommended reading list for the particular age groups and a journal to record the books read during the summer.
This summer Catch the Reading Bug at the Elaine I. Sprauve Public Library on St. John and discover the amazing world of reading. The Sprauve Summer Reading Program is open to young people, pre-readers through young adults, with prizes, reading clubs as well as story hours and projects. Registration for the program begins on June 22. The program is sponsored by the Friends of the Elaine I. Sprauve Library and the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands.
