June 26, 2009 — People shopping for groceries on St. Croix Saturday will have the chance to help people in need when they take part in the island's first Healthy Food Drive, an event scheduled to observe the National Health Care Day of Service.
According to a press release from Sen. Nellie Rivera-O'Reilly, targeted supermarket drop-sites will be set u between 8 a.m. and noon Saturday at Plaza Extra West, Pueblo in Villa La Reine and Orange Grove, Food Town Supermarket in Princess, and Schooner Bay Market Place in Gallows Bay.
The public can visiting the supermarkets can pick up a "Healthy Food List" at the entrance, buy any item on the list and, when leaving, drop it off with volunteers outside the store.
“I am calling on our community to help support the Queen Louise Home for Children, My Brothers’ Table and Catholic Charities VI, Inc. by purchasing specific healthy food items to be donated to each organization,” O’Reilly said. “As we fight for national health care reform, we must begin within our local communities by creating a healthier society, one family at a time.”
Volunteers willing to pass out flyers and collect the food from donors at each supermarket can call 340-332-3269 or Senator O’Reilly’s office at 712.2222 by 4 p.m. Friday.
Organizing for America, a project of the Democratic National Committee, is spearheading the National Health Care Day of Service in support of President Obama’s quest to reform healthcare.
