All organizations and interested persons are informed that the deadline to submit applications for the Adult Education and Family Literacy sub-grant competition has been extended. The new deadline is Friday, Oct. 30. The sub-grant awards have been established to provide adult education and literacy programs throughout the territory that will assist adults to become literate and obtain the knowledge and skills necessary for employment and self-sufficiency; assist adults who are parents to obtain the skills necessary to become partners in the education of their children; and assist adults in the completion of a secondary school education, according to a press release from Director for the State Office of Career, Technical and Adult Education Eduardo Cornerio.
Deadline for Adult Education and Family Literacy Sub-Grants Extended
The grant competition is open to eligible providers within the U.S. Virgin Islands to develop, implement and improve adult education and literacy activities. Eligible providers awarded federal funds through this application process are required to use the funds for the establishment or operation of one or more programs in the St. Thomas-St. John District, the St. Croix District, or both. Offerings must fall into one or more of the following categories: adult education and literacy services, including work place literacy services; family literacy services; and English literacy programs.
Who can apply? The following local providers are eligible to participate in the application process for these federal funds: (1) local educational agencies (2) community based organizations of demonstrated effectiveness (3) volunteer literacy organizations of demonstrated effectiveness; (4) institutions of higher education (5) public or private non-profit agencies (6) libraries (7) public housing authorities (8) non-profit institutions that are not described in any of these descriptions and have the ability to provide literacy services to adults and families and (9) a consortium of the agencies, organizations, institutions, libraries or authorities described in items (1) through (8). Community-based organizations and non-profit institutions include non-profit faith-based organizations. For-profit entities are not eligible.
