For some people the holiday season begins with early morning rushes to post-Thanksgiving super sales at department and discount stores. But on St. Croix, the cognoscenti know that the real beginning of the Christmas shopping season is the Starving Artists Sale and Guavaberry Competition at the Whim Museum.
This year the 21st incarnation of this yuletide event takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the museum in Estate Whim.
The Whim Museum grounds will come alive with local arts and crafts vendors, Crucian food and drinks, local plants and produce, children’s activities, and live local music.
Admission is $5, with those under 12 admitted free.
One of the major fundraisers for the St. Croix Landmark Association, the Starving Artist Sale last year drew more than 1,000 visitors, despite the troubled economy.
There’s plenty to see – local artisans selling jewelry, pottery, wood carvings, photography, plants, leather goods, candles, lotions, CDs, paintings, clothing and books.
Plus, there’s food and drink booths featured patés, johnny cakes, fritters, shish kebabs, fried fish, cakes, breads, tarts, local fruit smoothies, beer and mixed drinks.
The third annual guavaberry competition, sponsored by Paradise Radio 93.5, will feature island chefs competing for the most unusual and delicious uses of the local fruit, with cash prizes and trophies awaiting the winners.
Visitors can also expect performances by mocko jumbies, steel pan bands, and local storytellers.
