Special Education Hosts Leadership Academy to Focus on Drop-Out Prevention

The Virgin Islands Department of Education’s State Office of Special Education will host its annual Leadership Academy Dec. 14-18, at the Wyndham Sugar Bay Beach Resort & Spa. The academy focuses on the implementation of services that address improved educational and life outcomes for students with disabilities. Sessions will also focus on individualized educational needs, collaborative programming and flexible service delivery.
Presenting at this year’s meeting is Gary M. Reusch, an attorney who specializes in counseling school districts around the country on general and employment law issues. He also represents numerous districts in special education hearings and other school related matters.
Topics for discussion will include: What’s New Under IDEA 2004 Amendments and Regulations;Least Restrictive Environments (LRE); Disciplining Students with Disabilities – Suspension, Expulsions (Do’s and Don’ts) and Manifestation Determinations; Dispute Resolution Systems; Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA); Student Testing, Planning Successful IEPs and an Overview of Section 504.
