It’s Epiphany again. It’s the day on which the Three Kings (the Magi) arrive at the manger bearing gifts. I’ve always wanted to be where Three Kings Day is a big deal, not just a government holiday.
When I googled it, I learned that Puerto Rican kids put grass under their beds for the camels. I smiled imagining a camel getting his hump through my cottage door, let alone under my bed.
Epiphany comes from the Greek word meaning “to manifest” or “to show.” As a Christian feast day it celebrates the revelation of God in human form, and Webster’s dictionary defines it as “a sudden manifestation or perception of the essential nature or meaning of something.” It’s aha and awe: something essential has been revealed that was previously hidden.
I’ve incorporated Epiphany into my Law of Attraction vocabulary because it’s when we have an epiphany (an aha and/or awe-filled moment) that we open a door that had been closed or that we didn’t even see. We are manifesting beings whether we know it or not.
Like the magi, we can be grateful, celebrating what is revealed and made real, every single day in each of our lives. It’s the Law of Attraction in action.
Epiphany is connected in my history to the first TV my family got in the ‘50s—black and white. The first program I remember seeing was Amahl and the Night Visitors, a delightful operetta by Gian Carlo Menotti, commissioned especially for television.
It’s about a visit the Three Kings paid to a poor family who lived along the route to Bethlehem. The Kings were tired. Needing a place to stay, they stopped at the cottage of a poor peasant woman and her crippled son, Amahl. During the night, while everyone slept, the mother couldn’t resist the temptation to take a coin or two to feed her hungry child and was caught in the act. The Kings told her she could have the gold and sang a song about the promise of the child they were seeking; how his kingdom would be based on love, not gold.
I listen to and sing along with the CD every year, and I always cry when Amahl, the poor crippled boy-hero decides that he wants to take a gift to the child himself, and accompany the Kings as they follow the star. When he offers his only possession, his crutch, he discovers (and sings) that he can dance, walk, jump and he sets off on camels back with the Magi.
We all come bearing gifts – many of them hidden, even to ourselves. We are all following a star. The nighttime sky reflects the points of light that glow in our hearts – a happy thought as I look up at the Caribbean heavens sparkling with dots of light.
Every day is Epiphany. Each day we wake up in a place where miracles occur. As our thoughts take on form, we can be delighted, bowled over and offering our gifts: a crutch, gold, frankincense, a helping hand, a smile, a song, a wing and a prayer.
Let us honor the manifestation of all we desire in baby form – nourishing these seeds with love and tenderness as the days grow lighter.
