
The USVI Chess Federation conducted its 2010 scholastic tournament on St. Thomas on Jan. 16. Students from five schools competed in the only officially sanctioned tournament by FIDE, which is the chess governing body for the Virgin Islands. The St. Croix tournament will be held on Monday, Jan. 18. All the winners will then go on to compete in the territorial championships to be held on St. Croix on President’s Day, Feb. 15, and the winners will be eligible to represent the territory in the World Scholastic Chess Championships to be held later this year.
The winners are: under age 7: Alessandro Gever (Antilles School); under age 9: Senai Assefa (Antilles School); under age 11: Benjamin Shapiro (Antilles School); under age 13: Kayla Clendinen (Montessori School); under age 15: William Van Rensselaer (Antilles School) and under age 17: Eric Capo (Montessori School).
