UVI’s Bucs, Lady Bucs Take to the Road Following Home-Opening Wins UVI’s Bucs and Lady Bucs varsity basketball squads hit the road this weekend for road games against UPR-Carolina on Saturday and Sacred Heart University on Sunday. Their next home games are scheduled for Friday, Feb. 19, when the Bucs host Polytecnica in an 8 p.m. contest, and Sat. Feb. 20, when Metropolitan University’s men’s and women’s squads take on the Lady Bucs at 6:30 p.m. and the Buccaneers at 8:30 p.m. UVI home games are played in the Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus.

The UVI Buccaneers defeated University of Central Bayamon 101-70 in their home opener on Saturday, March 6. Five players scored in double figures. Max Cymerint sank 22, Wilson Ferrance and Nahshun Jeffers had 17, and Robert Duck and Cedric Smith ended up with 15 points each.
The Bucs won again at home on Sunday, Feb. 7, downing American University 59-52. Wilson Ferrance and Nahshum Jeffers were the top scorers with 14 points apiece. Robert Duck had 13 in the win. The Bucccaneers now stand 2-1 in LAI play. UVI’s Lady Bucs also won their home-opener on Sunday, Feb. 7, defeating American University, 67-59. Ashley Birch scored 29 points and had a game-high 15 rebounds, while Angelina Prince grabbed 13 points and 10 rebounds. The Lady Bucs led 31-23 at half time and led by as many as 20 points in the third quarter. The Lady Bucs are 1-0 in regular season LAI play.
UVI Campus Maps Available from the UVI Web Site Current maps of UVI’s St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses are available – in printable form – from the About UVI section of the UVI Web site – www.uvi.edu. UVI’s Campus Executive Administrators encourage members of the UVI community to utilize these maps and to discontinue the use of out-of-date maps. Additionally, campus maps are located at the information kiosks located on each campus. Offices are asked to discard older versions of campus maps and to print out copies of the maps for distribution as needed.
Student Workshops on Diversity Scheduled Feb. 18-19 on St. Thomas Campus Workshops on diversity will be offered to UVI students on the St. Thomas campus on Tuesday, Feb. 18, and Friday, Feb. 19. The sessions will focus on how students deal with differences in the work place, classroom and social settings. They will also offer information about assistive technology devices and services that are available for students with disabilities and those experiencing emotional distress.
Student Activities Coordinator Junie Violenes said diversity is a major factor that the university considers as it works to prepare students to interact in a global environment. She said the workshops will offer the opportunity to celebrate our differences.
Workshops will be held in UVI’s Administration and Conference Center. The Feb. 18 session will run from noon to 2 p.m. The Feb. 19 workshop will run from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The deadline for students to register is Tuesday, Feb. 16. Interested members of the UVI community are also welcome to participate.

Book Signing Scheduled Feb. 20 at Great Hall on St. Croix Campus Members of the University community are invited to a reception and book signing with author Mervelle A. Sage, the daughter of UVI Prof. Jewel Ross Brathwaite, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 20, at the Great Hall in the North West Wing on UVI’s St. Croix campus. Limited copies of Sage’s book, “Hanging with Uncle Eddie,” will be available for purchase. Workshop on Student Organization Processes Set Feb. 20 on St. Thomas The St. Thomas campus Student Activities Office will conduct a workshop on processes and procedures for student organizations from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 20. The workshop will take place in Teacher Education Room 101. New advisors and executive members of student organizations are invited to participate. Council for Exceptional Children Seeks Nominations for ‘Yes I Can’ Award The Student Chapter of the University of the Virgin Islands Council for Exceptional Children is seeking nominations for the group’s “Yes I Can” awards which will be presented on St. Thomas and St. Croix during the local celebration of National Down Syndrome Day and Exceptional Children’s Week from March 21-28.
The “Yes I Can” award recognizes students ages six through 25 with varying exceptionalities (gifted and special education) who excel in any of the following categories: academics, art, athletics, community service, extracurricular activities, independent living skills, advocacy and technology.
Parents or teachers with outstanding children or students are invited to make nominations. To qualify, students must currently live in the territory, have parental consent and fill in a nomination form. Nominations must be postmarked by Saturday, Feb. 20. No late nominations will be accepted. March 1 is Deadline for Submission of VI-EPSCoR Incubator Grant Proposals The Virgin Islands Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (VI-EPSCoR) has announced its 2010 request for Incubator Grant proposals. VI-EPSCoR Incubator Grants support researchers in exploring new research directions related to the project focus on Integrated Caribbean Coastal Ecosystems (ICCE) as well as exploring research approaches for improving education and outreach outcomes.

Fall Semester 2010 Advisement and Registration Set to Begin March 15 Advisement and registration for ongoing UVI students for the fall semester 2010 will begin on Monday, March 15. Members of the University community are advised that this date reflects a change in UVI’s previously published academic calendar.
2010 Edition of UVI Magazine Being Distributed The 2010 edition of UVI Magazine, Volume 11, has been published. Boxes of magazines have been sent to key individuals for distribution. Magazines destined for the St. Croix offices of the Campus Executive Administrator and Institutional Advancement will be shipped on Tuesday, Feb. 16. A total of 2,000 magazines were printed. dLOC Seeks Donations, Technical Assistance for Haiti Effort The Digital Library of the Caribbean (dLOC), an international collaboration of educational, research, governmental and non-governmental institutions that provides access to electronic collections about the Caribbean, is seeking donations and technical assistance for the recovery and protection of Haiti’s libraries and their valuable historical, governmental and cultural resources.
The Digital Library of the Caribbean has initiated the Protecting Haitian Patrimony Initiative, to assist recovery efforts at the country’s three largest heritage libraries and the National Archives, all of which were damaged in the Jan. 12 earthquake. Needed are gloves, masks, archival boxes and temporary staff to assist in the clean-up. Later, they will need to replace broken shelving, repair or replace damaged electronic equipment and provide more advanced restoration for many of the rarest books and documents.

St. Thomas Math Club Wins 2010 Black History Decoration Contest The UVI Math Club has won the 2010 Black History Month Decoration Competition on the St. Thomas campus. The prize is a trophy and a $250 Organization Award.
January UVI Newsletter Features Business Students, ‘Male Initiative’ The January issue of the monthly newsletter Dateline: UVI features a look at a group of UVI Business students making a mark in the competitive world of interactive, computer-based business simulation games. Also featured is a photo of UVI President Dr. David Hall meeting with students involved in the University’s “Male Initiative,” and a look at the results of a survey on student health. UVI’s CERC Advisory Board to Meet March 5-6 on St. Thomas The Caribbean Exploratory (NCHMD) Research Center (CERC) Advisory Board will meet from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on St. Thomas on Friday, March 5, and Saturday, March 6. The board is comprised of consultants from research-intensive mainland institutions of higher learning, as well as St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John community partners in education, public health and counseling.

Call for Cooks Issued for 2010 Afternoon on the Green UVI’s Afternoon on the Green Committee has issued a “Call for Cooks” for the 2010 edition of the University’s annual “friend-raising” event scheduled for March 7 on the St. Thomas campus. Individuals interested in providing food dishes for the event and those who would like to work as volunteers are asked to call 693-1040.
2010 Census Office Jobs Available The 2010 Census Office has approximately 300 positions available per district for the following temporary positions: crew leaders, crew leader assistants and enumerators.
Crew Leaders (part-time) are responsible for training and directly supervising approximately eight Enumerators. You will be required to collect completed Census forms from Enumerators, work in the field and must work varied hours. Crew leader assistants (part-time) work varied hours in order to assist the Crew Leader in the daily collection of completed work from enumerators. Enumerators (part-time) conduct interviews with respondents and work evening and weekend hours.
A valid driver’s license and use of a vehicle are required for all jobs. All applicants must pass a written test. Test will be administered at 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Monday – Friday at the St. Croix Census Office in Villa La Reine Shopping Center Suite 14 and at the St. Thomas Census Office in Nisky Center Suite 600. No appointment necessary. Evening and weekend testing is available by appointment. To make an appointment, on St. Croix call 772-2010 and on St. Thomas call 714-2010. On St. John the test will be administered at the Nazareth Lutheran Church Community Center in Cruz Bay. St. John testing will occur on Mondays and Wednesdays at 2:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 10 a.m.

Registration for CLEP tests is available at the Access and Enrollment Services Office in Evans Center Room 811. Testing begins promptly at 8:30 a.m. on each test date. Latecomers will not be allowed to take the test. The cost associated with CLEP is $72 per test. Checks or money orders should be made payable to CLEP. No cash will be accepted. An additional administrative fee of $15, payable to UVI, is due prior to the test date. A separate check and/or money order must be written for each test. SBDC Offers Seminar on Uses of Technology in Business The Virgin Islands Small Business Development Center (VI-SBDC), in collaboration with VI Technical Services, LLC. (VITech), will present a seminar titled “You Are Living in the 21st Century, Shouldn’t Your Business Be There Also?" at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 17, at the SBDC Training Facility at Nisky Center. The presenter is Stanford T. Mings, Jr., managing partner and chief systems architect for VITec. Admission is $25. Those who pre-register will receive a 20 per cent discount. UVI students, faculty, staff and veterans of the U.S. military are admitted free; however pre-registration is required. Seating is limited.
The seminar will focus on using technology in a business to increase competitiveness and reduce costs. It will also explore ways owners can monitor their businesses while traveling. The discussion will touch on both tried-and-tested and cutting-edge technologies ranging from data processing to cloud computing.

UVI-CELL and AMA Offer Workshops for Human Resources Professionals The University of the Virgin Islands Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVI-CELL) Center will offer a workshop titled Fundamentals of Human Resources on March 3 on St. Thomas and March 4 on St. Croix. The workshops are part of a series being offered by the UVI-CELL in conjunction with the American Management Association (AMA). Participants will learn the essentials of key human resources functions such as implementing a results-based performance management system, writing job descriptions and specifications, developing cost-effective, competitive compensation and benefits programs, and recruiting, selecting, interviewing and hiring employees in compliance with Federal and State laws. The St. Thomas workshop will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the CELL Center on UVI’s St. Thomas campus. The St. Croix session will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Joseph A. Simpson Building, No. 23A Hospital Street in Frederiksted.

UVI-CELL to Offer Course on Cake Decorating on St. Thomas The University of the Virgin Islands Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVI-CELL) Center will offer an introductory course for bakers, caterers and others interested in learning the basics of cake decorating. Introduction to Cake Decorating will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays beginning March 6. All sessions will be held at the UVI-CELL Center on the St. Thomas campus.
Students will learn the basic techniques used to design and decorate cakes, which can be used to further develop their own individual artistic and creative expression. The course will cover a variety of topics including making various types of icings, making simple icing flowers, borders, and lettering and much more.
