Education Commissioner Dr. La Verne Terry on Monday expressed great sadness upon hearing of the untimely death of employee Kevin James, who was fatally injured on Saturday. She said, "It is with an extremely heavy heart and regret that I offer condolences to the immediate family, co-workers, staff and friends of Mr. Kevin James. Mr. James was a valuable member of the Department’s Human Resources team. He joined the staff in October of 2007 in the position of research/date entry file clerk.
Karen Blyden, Human Resources director and James’ immediate supervisor, was emotional as she spoke about the seemingly increasing violence that is capturing our young males. "This is very frustrating and heartbreaking. Kevin was a quiet, unassuming young man who was very focused on his educational pursuits. He was a young black male working hard to uplift himself educationally and professionally. This unfortunate and senseless incident is a hard pill to swallow," she said.
An immediate characterization of James given by co-workers and other staff spoke to his very gentle nature and his being extremely humble, respectful, cooperative, dependable and conscientious. "Kevin was a hard worker and was always willing to assist other staff. He also had a humorous side, always ready with a smile and a joke…his way of lifting the tension sometimes associated with our work," said Assistant Director Nicole Jacobs.
James was a 2007 graduate of Florida Memorial University where he obtained a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration. Prior to his death, he was working toward a master’s degree.
"My heart and prayers go out to the family, but in particular, Kevin’s mother. It is never easy to lose a loved one, let alone your only child and knowing that at your last sight he was healthy, vibrant and loving life. We, at the department, know that this is an extremely difficult time for you. But rest assured that there is support and concern for you here with Kevin’s extended family," concluded Terry.
The commissioner said that grief counseling has been provided for the Human Resources staff and will be available as needed.
