UVI’s Student Chapter of the Council for Exceptional Children (UVI-CEC) has announced that Gov. John de Jongh has declared March 21 to 27 as Exceptional Children’s Week in the territory. “Children with disabilities need and deserve our support and resources,” said Chapter President Zoe Matthis. “Providing educational opportunities for children with disabilities enhances their ability to live independent, productive lives and to become integral, contributing members of their communities.” The theme of the observance, “In Someone Else’s Shoes,” calls attention to the need for Virgin Islanders to consider the challenges faced by those with disabilities or those with children with disabilities. Awareness walks and fun days will be held from 2:30-7 p.m. on Sunday, March 21. Registration is $5 per person or $25 for groups of 10 or more. The walk/fun day events will take place as follows: St. Thomas from Tutu Park mall to Joseph Gomez School; on St. John from the tennis courts to the National Park Play ground; and on St. Croix from Times Square in Christiansted to Canegata Ball Park.

Other activities include an Ice Cream Event on March 24, a Teen Italian Night on March 26, a Down Syndrome Dinner on March 27 at the Great Hall on UVI’s St. Croix campus (Tickets are $55 for adults and $25 for children), a UVI-CEC Gala on March 28, in the Administration and Conference Center on UVI’s St. Thomas campus (Tickets are $80).
