The Department of Licensing and Consumer Affairs (DLCA) informs the public of its latest territory-wide prescription medication survey findings. The findings are for the month of June and compare prices on ten of the most commonly used prescription medications for seniors (as indicated by AARP). The ten medications include: Alphagan P, Cosopt, Cozaar, Flomax, Humulin, Hyzaar, Lipitor, Plavix, Vytorin and Xalatan.
The prescription survey is meant to inform consumers which pharmacies have the best prices on the ten prescription medications, allowing them to make wise purchase choices. The survey has an additional goal of protecting consumers against fraudulent, deceptive advertising practices associated with the advertising of prescription drug prices by making it mandatory for vendors to post and advertise the prescription drug prices. These rules and regulations are pursuant to Title 12A, Section 123, of the Virgin Islands Code. DLCA inspectors have been visiting pharmacies throughout the territory to ensure compliance.
St. Croix
On St. Croix, Golden Rock Pharmacy had the lowest prices on six of the ten prescription medications: Alphagan P, Cozaar, Flomax, Lipitor, Plavix and Vytorin.
K-Mart Pharmacy had the lowest prices on two medications: Hyzaar and Xalatan. Doctor’s Choice at the Sion Farm and Oceanside locations had the lowest prices on two medications: Cosopt and Humulin.
St. Thomas and St. John
On St. Thomas, Healthy Living Pharmacy had the lowest prices on six of the ten prescription medications: Alphagan P, Cosopt, Flomax, Humulin, Lipitor and Vytorin. Drug Farm Pharmacy in Lockhart Gardens and Medical Arts locations had the lowest prices on three medications: Hyzaar, Plavix and Xalatan.Chelsea Drug Store on St. Thomas and St. John offered the lowest price on Cozaar.
Prices compared are based on cash purchases and do not reflect insurance, Medicare, Medicaid or other discounts, if any. Consumers should also note that generics, which are usually cheaper, may be available for the medications compared in the survey.
