Magens Bay Safe Again for Swimming, Officials Say

A game of stickball in progress at Magens. After a brief closure, Magens Bay is once again open to swimmers. Hubert Brumant, Magens Bay general manager, said Tuesday morning that the beach is now open for all to enjoy.
The famous beach was closed Friday after the recent heavy rains caused the mangrove swamp behind the beach to overflow, sending a stream of brackish water into the bay.
The beach has remained open, with no admission charge, but swimming was banned pending the results of Monday’s water sample test, which Magens does twice monthly.
"We got the results of the water testing, and everything is fine, Brumant said. "No bacteria, or just minimal, people have been swimming all morning."
"We have restricted the area where the water is flowing from the gut, allowing nature to take its course," he said.
The beach was eerily and, to some, pleasantly quiet over the weekend, as runners and a few strollers enjoyed the changed atmosphere.
All is back to normal now with swimmers, picnickers, stickball players and others enjoying nature’s gift.
