The Virgin Islands Department of Education will host a series of Human Resource activities for new personnel leading up to the opening of the 2010-2011 school year, according to a press release from Acting Human Resources Director Nicole Jacobs. The activities will include full-scale orientations and cultural diversity trainings in both districts, which are designed to educate and familiarize new hires with the community’s organization and culture as well as offer a series of related presentations by local government agencies and private sector businesses.
“Additionally, the orientations educate and familiarize new hires with community living and safety guidelines, as well as of relevant V.I. child protection laws, personnel policies and procedures, payroll and business office procedures, health care program and benefits; and employees’ obligations to the Government Employees’ Retirement System. The scheduled cultural diversity trainings serve to provide valuable information to off-island hires and make their transition to VI culture a seamless and agreeable experience,” Jacobs said.
Orientations have been scheduled as follows:
St. Thomas-St. John District – 8 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 16, at the Addelita Cancryn Jr. High School Auditorium
St. Croix District – 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 18, at the Curriculum Center in Kingshill, Christiansted.
Presenters for the orientations include: Department of Human Services, Virgin Islands Police Department, Division of Personnel, Government Employee Retirement System (GERS), Public Employees Relations Board and V.I. Board of Education. Newly hired employees who did not participate in previous orientation sessions are also encouraged and invited to attend.
